Biology-Centered Osteotomy Preparation

Dr. Marcus Abboud explores biology-centered osteotomy preparation and its critical role in achieving long-term success in implant dentistry. Moving beyond purely mechanical drilling, this approach emphasizes respecting living bone to support optimal healing, patient comfort, and implant stability. By minimizing thermal and mechanical trauma during osteotomy, clinicians can reduce inflammation, accelerate recovery, and deliver more predictable outcomes. This session provides practical strategies to integrate biologically respectful techniques into everyday workflows, enhancing both surgical efficiency and overall patient wellness.

Key Actionable Takeaways:

  • Protect Bone at the Cellular Level: Adopt osteotomy techniques that minimize heat and mechanical trauma to preserve viable bone and support faster healing.

  • Enhance Surgical Efficiency: Implement small refinements and optimized drilling workflows that improve procedure speed without compromising biological integrity.

  • Align Technique with Patient Wellness: Integrate biology-driven protocols that reduce postoperative discomfort, inflammation, and complications, ensuring superior short- and long-term outcomes.

Dr. Marcus Abboud graduated from the University of Bonn (Germany) in 1996 and began his Prosthodontic training there in 1997. He earned his PhD in Dentistry/Prosthodontics in 2000. From 2001 to 2003, he contributed to the Department of Dental Research (Material Science) at the University of Bonn before entering the Oral Surgery Certificate Program at the same institution in 2003, which he completed in 2007. Subsequently, he served as an Assistant Professor and Principal Investigator for Interdisciplinary Clinical Studies until September 2010.

In 2010, Dr. Abboud received his Expert Certification in CBCT Technology and Diagnostics from the Dental Medical Association Nordrhein. He was the Founding Chair of the Department of Prosthodontics and Digital Technology at Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine (SDM) from 2011 to 2016, where he established three specialty programs: Prosthodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Prosthodontics, and Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. He also managed the Division of Endodontics and served as the Director of Continuing Education at SDM.

From July 2016 to September 2019, Dr. Abboud was a Full Professor and Associate Dean for Digital Dentistry at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry. During this time, he modernized both pre- and postdoctoral education programs, enhancing clinical efficiency and increasing clinical revenue, patient visits, and student applications through the integration of digital dentistry and implantology.

Since September 2019, he has been the CEO of Loocid LLC, a medical and dental innovation company. Dr. Abboud has authored over 60 publications, research articles, and book chapters, and has delivered more than 250 national and international lectures on CAD/CAM technology, digital dentistry, implantology, bone grafting, guided surgery, and CBCT/CT diagnostic imaging. With over 18 years of research experience, he holds multiple patents used in various countries, offering innovative solutions for dentistry.
